Can't make new raster layer bug? (X4)

Postby Auser on Mon Feb 13, 2012 11:13 am

Ok, this appears to be a totally weird bug:

I was needing to add new layers and got annoyed by having to move the mouse down to the bottom to click the button all the time (why is it down there? move it up please)

So I thought I'd undock the palette and make it shorter - less space to move.

However, it doesn't work when the palette is undocked!

What happens is:

If the Layers Palette is docked to the side of the screen, I click the "New Layer" button and can chose a layer from the menu.

If the Layers Palette IS NOT docked , I click the "New Layer" button but in the menu that shows up "New Raster Layer" and "New Vector Layer" becomes unselected a split second after the menu has displayed.
Ie, I can't actually select "New Raster layer"

Is this a known bug?

Yes it does :)

Btw, there isn't a way to assign keyboard shortcuts that I have overlooked?

Go to your view menu

View -> Customize

In the customize dialog there is a tab called "keyboard" find the commands you want to apply a short-cut key to and type in the shortcut you want to use.

You know, there are many things in the interface I don't want them to touch (and bring back some of what you have removed Corel!) - but one thing I've always thought they should change ADD ALL OPTIONS IN THE SAME PLACE.

They are spread all over :-/

Anyway thanks a lot LeviFiction

I know this response might be late, but this issue drove me crazy too. I didn't know about the actual bug until I found this thread. A friend suggested I create a custom tool bar. I never considered doing that before and now I have my most used items all in one place. Works great.

That's a good tip, didn't even think of custom bars.

I struggled wit that one as well.

Was very used to doing a right click and getting the same context menu as the Menu Bar Layers gave. No need to move down to a small button or up to a Menu bar Layers just right click on a free area of the required layer.
Finally after a lot of digging and using Customise I have the X4 giving me the X 3 choices and when it is docked I have the buttons down below as well. It was a big learning curve for me and showed me the power in PSP for customisation.
Have saved the workspace and a backup so can transfer between my X4 and some people's that I am coaching in X4. That way we all have the same options.

While your palette is docked, you can customize it and move the icons from the bottom to the top if you prefer that (i know i do!). The only icon that will not work as it should if it is moved up is the Lock transparency. So you CAN get your familiar palette look with the icons on top if you want. :)

I don't recall having any trouble moving the Lock Transparency button (I can't open X4 to check because the trial has expired) but there are two other buttons that will become inactive if you move them. They're the New Layer button and the New Mask Layer button. I found the equivalent buttons in the lists of commands to add. The buttons I used were New Raster Layer and Mask From Image. The difference is that the buttons I added don't have the drop-down arrows with options for the type of layer or the mask options.
