X4 Tone Mapping: Block Size is what?

Postby dangelic0 on Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:29 pm

From X3 to X4, Corel added a "Block Size" control to the Local Tone Mapping adjustment. Does anyone know technically what this is doing? Is it the number of pixels over which the contrast adjustment is being applied? It seems that the smaller block sizes reduce the effect's harshness (when it could be harsh, e.g., with faces).

Checked the manual and they forgot to mention it.

Thanks

Well according the the webinar with Mr. Copley and Ms. Watts, recording available to watch, it does have to do with the size of the block of pixels that the strength setting is applied to. Mr. Copley mentioned that as we get more and more mega-pixels rather than telling the algorithm what block size to use as larger sizes come up (essentially fixing the algorithm as things continue to change) they simply gave us that option to fool around with.

Though obviously they don't come right out and specifically define "block size" but that's what it sounds like.
