Bug Crash X4: Drop shadow on new layer.

Postby flagpole on Wed Sep 14, 2011 10:40 am

Apologies if this is not the way you report bugs, but i'm not aware of any formal bug tracking.

This bug has always been in PSP. for as long as i can remember. but in previous versions it just sent it bananas. in this version it can cause a full crash and lock up.

If you have no layer below the one currently selected, for example you only have one raster layer (put something in this layer suitable for drop shadow,) and you select 3D effects -> drop shadow with 'shadow on new layer' selected every time you adjust one of the shadow parameters it creates a new layer. so you can end up with dozens of new layers. seems like part of the routine is to renew the process everytime a parameter is adjusted but the logic that removes the layer doesn't work when the source is at the bottom.

new to X4 is that if my system is under high cpu utilization it just completely crashes. probably the method by which it allocates the new memory to new layers is timing out.

I've never seen any difference between applying a drop shadow to the bottom layer or a layer higher up in any version of PSP that I've used. For however many times I apply a drop shadow, with "Shadow on new layer" checked, it adds another shadow layer. I don't see that as a bug. That's what I would expect to happen. It does the same thing no matter where the layer is in the Layers palette.

no no that's not the bug.

it should create only one new layer. just try it.

to reproduce:
create a new raster image with transparent background
draw on it with the paint brush or something
go to drop shadow
check shadow on new layer
try adjusting the parameters, offset, colour, blur etc.
you will notice each time you adjust the parameter a new layer is created
click cancel and notice all the new layers remain.

now delete the new layers just leaving the original and add a new raster layer, put this below the one with the image and repeat. observe the correct behaviour.

That's not a bug :-)
If the first shadow is not in the right place and you need to change it, just Undo (Ctrl+Z) the setting and start again.
The program is doing what you are instructing it to do, ie add the shadow on it's own (new) layer, in your case over and over again :-)

No shadow layers appear in my Layers palette until I click the OK button. At that point I end up with just one shadow layer that uses the last setting that I'd made. I can't imagine why your shadow is showing up as a layer(s) before you've ever applied it. I can change the parameters a hundred times before pressing OK and I'll still only end up with one shadow layer.

the behaviour is not correct.

i feel i must not be explaining it properly. so i have created a video.

note the difference in behaviour when there are two layers and only one.

the video is embedded below, but the link is better for 720p goodness.

to behonest i can handle the bug like this, it's when it actually crashes it that prompted me to post this.

Ooo, nice video!
Sorry, but this doesn't happen here.
Have you tried resetting PSP?

If not, try this:
Save your workspace if you have altered it in any way.
Close PSP. Re-open PSP, holding the Shift key until you get a message telling you that PSP will revert to it's default settings.
It's a great trick and worth a try :-)

Thanks for showing that video. That's not supposed to do that. It doesn't do it with my install of X4. I'd report that as a bug, have you tried resetting the workspace?

Hmm...it was originally working for me during the beta. There was a special report made for this for X3 because it was not found in previous versions. (For me versions 7, 9,10,x1,x2 all worked as expected. This didn't break until X3).

However, what originally worked for me in the beta works for me no longer. So I concur there is a problem and I will be submitting a report to Corel as well.

Which, by the way, you had mentioned reporting bugs. While we do report bugs to each other here on the forums it's not the official way to report a bug. I wasn't sure what you were asking about reporting bugs if you just meant for the forum or officially. But officially call Corel (don't email, they never respond properly) and report the issue.

I can't try this in X3 or X4 since I don't have those versions but flagpole said that he's had this bug in all versions of PSP "for as long as he can remember". That's what prompted me to double-check the ones that I have. Which versions are you talking about flagpole? This never happens in PSP5, 6, 7, 8 or X2.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents....I was able to re-create this bug here on my X4 ultimate. Strangest darn thing I've ever seen!

I tried recreating the problem on a beta version of PSP X4 and the retail version and it does not happen on my end. I would suggest to follow the suggestion that they gave you above.. Reset the workspace... You can do that by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.

@flagpole - can you tell me what is the build/version number of your PSP X4? So that I can report this to our Engineers.

Sorry, brain not functioning....I thought I gave you what you needed. I went to Help > About to get that information. I saw the version number there but no build number, so I clicked system info as I assumed all the info was there. It's easier for me to copy & paste things and it won't let me copy & paste that number. I had to put it side by side so I can type it so hopefully I type it right. My eyes are very tired right now.

Corel PaintShop Pro 14.0.0.332

By the way, I also posted today about the mirror/flip bug I have. I also tried to report it, but the stupid thing came back saying I wasn't logged in, eevn though I was. I wasn't about to type it all in again. Also I posted last week about the Filter bug that I have in X4. I did report that and haven't heard a peep.
