Danny4,

See http://lifehacker.com/5245396/set-up-and-use-xp-mode-in-windows-7

Be sure to pay attention to the system requirements!

Hope this helps (and works! I love Cool3D myself...one of the reasons I didn't upgrade to Vista),

Each time I use C3D or C3D PS (I own them both along with the plugin-madness 2 and 3) I am truly amazed at the wealth of features and the ease of use of these two programs.

I wish Corel could wise-up and see the value in these 2 products and come-up with updates for Vista and Windows 7, and possibly new versions as well.

Cool 3D in Windows 7

Postby snoops » Fri Dec 25, 2009 9:42 pm

I haven't been here for a long time but I saw this thread and have some feedback... it's working for me, without using a virtual machine or anything. Just a manual regsvr32 and a little trick...

I installed Cool3D 3.5 normally in Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit. At the end of the installation it reported a few modules that did not register properly, but all Cool3D files were installed.

Ran the program, Windows warned about compatibility, and I let it run anyway. (No solution was provided in the feedback anyway)

Cool3D needs the Direct3D Retained Mode DLL which is not found in Windows 7. I put a copy of %windir%\system32\d3drm.dll from an XP installation into the Cool3D program folder. Other programs do not see the old file because it is not in the Windows area.

Then I manually registered the Cool3D modules that did not register during the installation, using a hint on Corel's site about similar messages during installation, where there is also a .bat file to download. These are the commands you can put in .bat file. You only need to register the ones that failed, like "Path Animation". But it won't hurt to register them again. These commands are run in Cool3D's program folder so that the paths to the files are correct:
Code: Select all
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Bend\C3dBend.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Blast\TxExplosion.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Board\c3dboard.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Bump\Txknock.dll
regsvr32 /s "Plugins\Custom Bevel\C3DUSDBevel.dll"
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Dance\C3DDancing.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Distort\C3DDEFORM.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Explosion\c3dexplosion.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Fire\c3dfire.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Frame\C3dOutLine.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Glow\c3dglowshadow.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Hollow\c3dHollow.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Imprint\c3dConcavity.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Jump\TXJUMP.dll
regsvr32 /s "Plugins\Motion Blur\c3dmotionblur.dll"
regsvr32 /s "Plugins\Motion Path\c3dANIMATEOnPath.dll"
regsvr32 /s "Plugins\Path Animation\C3DAnimate2.dll"
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Shadow\c3dshadow.dll
regsvr32 /s "Plugins\Surface Animation\C3DAnimate1.dll"
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Token\C3dToken.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Twist\c3dtwist.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\Lightning\c3dLight.dll
regsvr32 /s Plugins\TextWave\TextWave.dll
regsvr32 /s C3dShape.dll
regsvr32 /s C3dmetaball.dll
regsvr32 /s C3dTorus.dll
regsvr32 /s C3dCone2.dll
regsvr32 /s C3dFrustum.dll
regsvr32 /s C3DBump.dll
regsvr32 /s ud3bezier.dll

All the additional content and goodies were then installed normally, without problems. In Windows 7 they were automatically installed in Cool3D's program folder (in Plugins, Presets), not in the user's folder like they were in XP. This is better, because everything is together.

Now Cool3D starts normally and is working in Windows 7. I have not checked every item, but I have not yet discovered anything wrong.

Note: if it does not work for you, then it may be due to the old graphics driver I am using: it is DirectX7 based and not Aero capable.

And Merry Christmas too!

Hi Steve,

I didn't notice the "new" Vista / Windows 7 forum when I posted my answer in the Cool3D forum. I now see that related posts here already cover the d3drm.dll topic for Cool3D, so I guess I've just repeated things already known.

I was surprised to see many of the forum users like yourself still active here after all these years.

I wish you best of luck and a healthy new year!
