IVI Capture in UVS 11.5 and Vista

In the past, I started a topic where I experienced dropping frames in my system using VS11. My PC is a capable PC (AMD 4800+, 3GB RAM) running Vista 32bit. My capture card is a AverMedia DVD EZMaker Gold PCI with the latest reference drivers from the manufacturer's website.

As I mentioned before, when I was grabbing in 720*576 PAL MPEG2 in VS11, I had frames being dropped. I tried other software and I noticed that with other software I also had frames being dropped. I used Cyberlink's PowerDirector (latest Vista Certified) and latest VirtualDub and had no luck. Still frames being dropped.

The reason I used VS 11 was that I owned VS10 but it was not functioning properly until the vista fix was released. I gave a last try with VS 10 and guess what? Perfect capture. PERFECT.

The issue now is that I bought VS 11 in the past and I downloaded all patches/updates. I recently made a clean install of Vista 32bit Ultimate with SP1 integrated and reinstalled VS 11 and applied the patches. Disappointment. Still the same problems. Frames being dropped. You may say "Stick with VS 10" but the problem is that I bought VS 11 and I am not using it. Also VS10 is not aero friendly and changes Windows to another theme when starting.

I am wondering:

a) If Corel will fix this. Why is VS10 working just fine and VS11 not?

b) Could it be an issue with hardware/drivers? The capture card I mentioned has Vista drivers and is Vista certified. After all, it works fine with VS10.

c) If you think it is hardware/drivers related with regard to the AverMedia DVD EzMaker Gold PCI, can you recommend me a card (for capture from analogue devices) in the European market that works fine with Vista and VS11;

It works fine with VS10 because it uses the Video For Windows/DirectShow capture plug-in. VS11 does not, it uses Intervideo's IVI capture plug-in.

Will Corel fix it is unknown..

No I don't believe it's a hardware/driver issue, as stated above, I think it is a compatibility issue with the IVI capture plug-in.

I don't use anything but Firewire (IEEE1394) from my DV camcorder. The last time I used a capture card, VS5 or 7 was the current version. I used an ATI AIW card. I know one of our very well respected Moderators, Terry Stetler posted an article where AMD/ATI is releasing a new AIW capture card. The first release in a few years. There are several real good ones, however they do carry a moderate to high price tag. Canopus capture cards are some the best on the market.

Hauppauge makes some good capture/TV cards. Steve (sjj1805) uses them, so would be better able to provide you with more information and insight..

Thanks for your answers. I added my specs but I will sum them here too

CPU: AMD X2 4800+ EE (but I also had a 4600+)
Motherboard: Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe with latest f/w
RAM: OCZ 2 *1GB + 2*512MB. (This model)
Gfx Card: Sapphire ATi X1950 Pro PCIE 512MB
HDD: 1 * Seagate 80GB for System and Programs + 1 * Seagate 120GB for Video stuff. Both are SATA 2 but in the past I had WD Sata 1 HDDs with the same capacity.
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 with all the updates (but problem existed with Windows Vista Ultimate pre SP1).
Capture Card: AverMedia DVD EZMaker Gold PCI. I had it to the last PCI slot on the bottom of the mobo but I also moved it one slot up to check.

I suppose this is what matters and I won't add my PSU or DVDR drives.

I have latest reference drivers for everything aka from AMD-ATi site, nVidia (for my motherboard), Asus (for audio), AverMedia (for capture card).

The only codec I have installed is Keopi's latest XviD release. In the past I also had the original DivX codec.

For A/V I had NOD32 (but expired) and now I bought Avira Antivir Premium.

I know, I mentioned nearly everything but if you require any further help, please let me know.

The system itself is up to scratch, the problem I suspect lies in Vista.
Press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys together and bring up task manager and check to see how many running processes you have.

You now need to try and reduce that figure to as low as possible.
When you buy a computer preloaded with Vista the companies that sell these machines also install a load of unwanted junk that simply slows the machine down. Over a period of time further programs attach themselves to the startup programs either in the Windows Start Folder or in the Registry or even in the services console.

Whilst you cannot create a "Video Editing Profile" in Vista like you can with XP you can still follow that tutorial and do as much as you can to reduce the drain on your computers resources. This might help.

Thanks for your answer. My Vista SP1 installation is a clean install I did from MSDN. This means it is as basic as it can be and I only have something like 10 programs installed (mostly light and freeware). I also avoid s/w like ATi's CCC and use super light ATi Tray Tools. So basically, my PC is not having much. I will try and install VS11 in a clean Vista installation with only the graphics driver and audio driver and see how it behaves.

Things that make me confused is

a) Other software is dropping frames too
b) VS10 doesn't drop frames

Go figure. Modern computer headaches.
