I go back quite a ways with Ulead, not so sure about this Corel thing. I have a serious version problem now.

Problem, Ulead Video Studio 11 has stopped working. "....either a video capture device is not installed or has stopped working...."

Software was installed and registered on this PC a little over a year ago, worked fine with no issues. I do not use this very often, when I do it is to take video off my Sony Digital Handy Cam for editing and posting on You Tube. It's been over 6 months since my last session, since then apparently a lot has changed.

Anyway, device manager says all is well with the handy cam.

In an attempt to find program updates I find Ulead is a dead site, redirects over to Corel, Corel does not even acknowledge that Ulead VS 11 or prior even exists, patches seem to start with X2, so I appear to be stuck in a typical company buy out previous owners are toast loop.

The question I guess becomes, is there an upgrade path that does not involve spending an arm and leg for something that rarely gets used? Or any ideas on where to start with solving the problem?

Ulead VideoStudio will be around 5/6 years old now and was therefore released way before Windows 7 was even mentioned, let alone released so it is quite surprising that it ran on your Win7 PC in the first place - I can only assume that either a Windows update or an update to some other component of your computer finally tipped the balance - It was never claimed that Ulead VS Version 11 would run on Windows 7.

The waters are a little cloudy with the takeover of Ulead by Corel but I do not think that even if it was still Ulead that you would get any support for version 11 currently. software companies these days do not support a product forever especially across numerous Windows operating systems.

and the really bad news - there is no cheap upgrade path for you or a cheap solution - version 11 is not even a valid version for a reduced price upgrade I'm afraid - your only option if you want to stay with VideoStudio is to buy Version X5 - you can download a free 30 day trial so you can evaluate if you consider the purchase worthwhile.

Sorry but that's the way it is.

If it did work previously with win 7, you may find that you can get it wrking again by changing the firewire driver, here's how.

Here is a short synopsis of what I've tried so far:

With my Ulead VS 11 disk I performed a "repair", I have not yet tried a full uninstall / re-install though, the repair failed to fix (it actually looked like it did a full install based on the files that loaded. I will go back and do a full install and try that, good tip. I will also try the link to the "fix" site, I did go back into my video files and confirm that it was working on this computer under win7 with no issues, that was in mid 2011, and I have video files on my machine that Ulead vs11 put there from my handy cam, so I'm not senile yet.

Yesterday I thought I'd try the free trial, even though the sticker shock for the license is still resonating heavily, but,,,, free trial install would not run (the initial portion, with the TBYB.exe file seems to run fine, appears to unzip a bunch of files to somewhere (they cleverly block out the file path so you can't go down there and run setup manually after it unzips, they think of everything don't they?), anyway, after that, phase 2 where the install wizard is supposed to fire up fails to run. So I tried X4 trial instead, same deal. Therefore,,, I appear to be locked out of any free trial. (btw, I am running the install as administrator),,, any tips on that? (I don't get any popups from virus / firewall about letting it run btw, it just stops after phase 1, I've watched the execute file run using task manager, it just goes away)

This AM just for fun I removed my video capture hardware, restarted without the capture board, shut down, installed a second video capture board, watched all the drivers install properly, and hooked up the handy cam again just to make sure windows agrees it is there, which it does. So I do not think it's a driver thing.

Bottom line, I'm not very impressed with Corel at this point. Huge amounts wanted for the product, absolutely disgusting covert download and install routine, and I cannot find one bit of info on how to get around the install failure on the free trial. No way am I going to commit funds to this company until I can at least verify the thing will work.

for any techie types, my pc is homebuilt, Biostar MB, AMD phenom quad core, 1 TB hard drive, 2GB ram, Geforce GTX 9500 video card, Win7 home edition premium, sp1, all updates.

I'm totally stumped now. Windows see's the camera both in device manager and in "devices and printers" via the start menu and / or control panel, there it is,,, "Sony DV Camcorder".

I downloaded the windows live suite, to get movie maker and photo gallery (which is shown in a dialog box when you turn on the cam corder), they both work, neither one will acknowledge the camera.

So,,,, windows knows they are there, the drivers are good, and I followed the tips from the link about getting movie maker going, and installed the "legacy" driver.

I downloaded a freeware quick and simple video capture software, it can't detect the camera.

I therefore conclude, using Einsteins definition of insanity, (to whit; doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result) that neither Corel, nor any other software video capture / editing software is going to work either.

So I must ask, is ANYONE successfully capturing video on a win7 64 bit home premium edition machine using firewire video capture?

Do a google search on "Windows 7 Firewire video capture" and you will get millions of hits.

BTW, Roxio is now part of Corel.

Thanks for the link, yes, I performed all those steps in #13, no better. But further down where there is evidence of roxio working on a win7 64 bit machine was a great site, maybe there is some hope after all.

Sorry to hear you are still having problems.

Installing Video Studio, some users found that by creating a new user account on your pc as admin allowed the install to complete.
Once installed the user account could be removed.
Installing VS, the files are unwrapped to a temporary folder, The installation is paused waiting for user input. At this point search the pc for the installation files. Once the installation is complete/terminated these files are deleted.

I know that VS 11 did have its own problems relating to capture, I do not own 11 so not sure of all the implications, However I believe that it may have been associated with analogue capture.

There is a free program that will capture DV---- WinDV
I do not know if this is W7 compatible but maybe worth a try, others on the forum may be able to confirm this?

Do you have another program running that is controlling the firewire port, for instance when I use WinDV then try VS the program does not see my camera, giving some error? That is until i close Win DV

If no programme can detect and use the cam, using both new adn legacy driver, I would conclude that there is a fault in the hardware somewhere. Bad cable, fault on the card or even in the cams firewire port.

Find a friend who has a pc that can capture video using firewire and try your cable and cam, does it work? Yes it might be your firewire card. Are they really good friends? Will they let you try your firewire card in their pc? No, use their cable? Does it work now? Yes need a new cable, or borrow theirs and try on your machine.

Once you have established that all the hardware is in fact working, is the point we need to start looking at software again.
