VSPro-x4. questions re DV Type-1/2 & Aspect ratio

Postby Carroll on Wed Mar 14, 2012 5:03 pm

After labouring through the online help and having searched the forum as best I could I could not come up with answers to my questions.

1. ". ....When capturing DV, click Options in the Options Panel and select Video properties to open a menu. In the Current Profile, choose whether to capture DV as DV Type-1 or DV Type-2."

Why? What difference will it make? What will choosing one over the other do for me or to me?

2. My camcorder is not HD however some vids are in HD from a camcorder I borrowed. I work in 16.9 widescreen and change to 16.9 aspect ratio everywhere the choice appears. I use .avi (my CC) and .mpg (Quicktime and the HD) videos for my projects. Each time I render them for You Tube my videos are almost the shape of a square and on You Tube there are big black borders down the sides. I don't like it one bit as I want them to fill the You Tube screen like everyone's does.

Why can I not do that? What changes will I have to make in my preferences and project properties or saving or whatever, to get this to happen?

I can't answer your second question as I have never used YouTube and have no plans to do so. But there are quite a few people here who should be able to answer that one.

As for your first question, successive versions of VS seem to prefer Type 1 DV/AVI, though I don't know why. It can certainly accept Type 2 as I personally have used it in a number of projects in the past with video captured in Adobe Premiere (which captures DV by default as Type 2). However, some users have had difficulty with Type 2 and so we recommend they use Type 1.

The only significant difference is that Type 2 has two separate channels for video and audio (though all in one stream). Type 1 has both video and audio in a single channel.

Type 2 gives you unlimted file size. Type 1 gives you a 2GB or 4GB (I can't remember) file size limit.

Ah yes. The original DV Type 1 specification limited it to 4 GB but for practical reasons, it was really only 2 GB. That is a bit over 9 minutes of video (1 hour takes about 13 GB). That never really worried me as my DV clips were seldom more than a minute long (and I always used split by scene)...

As for the youtube problem - what format and aspect ratio do you use to render the video that you upload to youtube

Thank you everyone for your help. I haven't been able to get back here until now so I apologize for my absence.

The way that Type-2 is explained could be the reason I am having problems. I didn't intentionally set it to type-2, I just discovered it when I was trying to see if all the settings were right as I was having continuing problems from one video to the next.

I have a Sony HandyCam - analog. I download in DV format which gives me a .avi file. I had CVS-X2-Pro first but had very few problems. Now when I work with an .avi file I usually get a 16:9 output which stretches everything to fit that ratio. I have to change to edit in .mpg and still I get the 16:9 output off and on. I just finished doing the share step for the 4th time on one project before I came out right.

In my preferences where applicable every thing is set to 4:3 ratio or "Keep aspect ratio". Sometimes I set it to "fit project size" to see if it will stop the 16:9 finished product. In the Preferences/options/video save options window I have the "display aspect ratio" set to 4:3.

In the project Properties/Project options/general window that is also set to 4:3.

When I work on a project in the Preferences menu I have the "Widescreen" checked. I don't know if that has anything to do with the final output as I get both ratios whether it is or isn't checked.

Hopefully, I've explained it well enough.

Hi Carroll

I assume you are capturing your video to the pc via firewire and selecting DV as the capture format, is this correct.?

When you use this method the video from the camera is literally copied/transferred to the pc. What you have is what you get DV-Avi. if the camera recorded using 16:9 then that is what you get.
Read my guide Dv-AVI
http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/guides/q ... de_avi.htm

From the timeline Right click one of your clips and select properties what are they?

There seems to be some confusion regarding the aspect ratio, can you give property details of all the different types of video you are using, right click each type. If you have two types then which one do you wish to use 4:3 or 16:9, I assume you will want to use widescreen 16:9

Carroll, what are you trying to make?

You indicate You Tube, but are you also wanting to burn a DVD?

Hi Trevor

Again I must apologize for taking so long to get back to the forum. My time has not been my own lately

Trevor asked "I assume you are capturing your video to the pc via firewire and selecting DV as the capture format, is this correct.?"
My reply, YES!

Trevor asked "From the timeline Right click one of your clips and select properties what are they?"
My reply;

Properties
File
Format; Microsoft AVI files - OpenDML
Size; 955351 kb
Frame rate; 29,70 frames/sec
duration; 271.939 sec
Data rate; 3512.11 kbps
Video
compression; DV Video Encoder - type 1
attributes; 24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
Total Frames; 8,150 frame(s)
Audio
Compression; DV Audio - NTSC
Attributes; 30.000 kHz, 12 Bit, Stereo
Total samples; 8,702,035 samples
END
I also use .MOV and .mpg files. Do you also want those properties?

Trevor asked "There seems to be some confusion regarding the aspect ratio, can you give property details of all the different types of video you are using, right click each type. If you have two types then which one do you wish to use 4:3 or 16:9, I assume you will want to use widescreen 16:9"
My reply; The aspect ratio in the Settings -preferences and project properties- does confuse me most of the time. I have set them to 16.9, the clip stretches across the work screen then, I change the settings back but, sometimes it won't go back so I have to close the project and click "not save".
What I actually want is to produce 16.9 videos from all my clips for upload and to DVD that are not stretched horizontally to fill the newer widescreen players.

Hi Carroll

When we capture/transfer the video to the pc, the footage is literally copied from the camera to the computer. There is no re-coding, so what you have in the camera DV-Avi is what you get.
The aspect ratio is 4:3.
For future work change the recording in camera to 16:9, I assume you can do this.

Please read this Guide to DV-Avi

Then read this regarding changing the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9

The guides were written using earlier versions but are still relevant using X4

I capture a whole tape (1 hour) as 1 dv-avi(type1) file. So I get about 12 GB per file. Per project I have 8-10 tapes. I have never had a problem about the length of these files.

I think that the filesize limits are related to the AVI1/2 categorization (and the disc formatting), but not to the DV type1/2 specifications.

Erdna, the type of avi does have size limitations, even type 2 is limted, but it is to 18billionGb, so not really any cause for concern at the moment.
Here is some in depth reading

Of course, all computer files have limits...Because of the confusion in this thread about the file size limit in relation to the Microsoft DV type, I wanted to add that the real size related issues are in the AVI1/2 specs, and not in the DV type specs. See e.g. http://forums.creativecow.net/archivethread/3/279586

No Trevor I haven't received any notifications even though I have checked the box to be notified 4 times since I first joined. I came now to see if anything had been added to this thread which, I see has been. Not getting notified has attributed to my not getting back to the forum for up to a month thinking no one answered. Just came across that word a short time ago and after doing a search and reading many explanations of it, I have no idea if my video is anamorphic. There seems to be differing opinions on it in relation to videos, TVs, DVDs etc, etc.
