Import video from an unfinished dvd?

Postby brucefl on Mon Mar 28, 2011 4:43 pm

Hi,

I have a disc here of a friends funeral I need to edit and make some disc. It was recorded on a DVD and from what I can tell was not finalized, though I was told it was. It will not play in any computer or DVD player.
It was recorded from a VCR/DVD recorders.
I have an OEM version of NERO that shows me the disc information so I know there is information on it (.dat) Is their any easy way to get this into VSX3?
At least free of charge :) Not going to beleager the fact to them it is not finalized.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Send it back to them and ask them to finalise it, or track down the same make and model set and do it yourself, I'm afraid are the only options.

If it is not finalized it can't be done.

Hello brucefl,

Yes, like what they say, the disc should be finalized. A disc that is not finalize is like a wet cement, you cannot walk on it. Like on a disc, if it is not finalized, the disc cannot be read by your optical disc drive.

Something like isobuster would not work then, or Nero recorde?

Have a worse problem now, can not find where I put the dvd lol

I just went and re-recorded it.

I have successfully used/imported non – finalised disks with Ulead and Corel;
DVD + RW
DVD – RW
DVD RAM
This however is dependent on the Manufacturers (dvd device) spec for the above including CPRM.

I tend to work with RAM Disks at the moment which are not/ever "Finalised".

Just because the OS is unable to play the dvd files does not mean they cannot be imported to VS in many cases.

A dvd recorder will have most likely used VR recording, have you succesfully used that type of disc?
How?
With what?

It would be very helpful if you told us all exactly how to do it .

Hi

When I use a normal DVD-R type I have to finalise the disc in order to use it.
I have to navigate the recorder menu in order to achieve “finalise”

However I have used DVD + RW types and simply ejected them, I have to say that the recorder does seem to do something before ejecting the disc, but I did not activate a finalise.
I am able to view the discs on my pc and Import to VS.

I’ll do a quick test, soon………….

Test done
I have just read the instruction manual and it appears that DVD+RW types are “automatically finalised when removed from the unit”

Hope this image will clarify the imports?

From left to right, DVD – RW, DVD + RW, DVD RAM, VR mode disk imports to VS.

I think we all know VR mode imports into VS, but none of us have been able to import a non finalised disc into VS, just wondered if you followed any particular steps to do it, used any other programmes in those steps etc.
To be honest I haven't tried a non finalised disc in X4, only in previous versions, so I am going to record one today and try it.

None of the above examples (RW`s) are Finalised disks.

This is the image info from an imported Finalised DVD – RW disk as an example,

Note the format as DVD Video

Addition overlooked Oops;
Guessing the posts relate to “write-once” media +/- R not RW disks.
