Corel forum - Insecure login warning

Postby Davidk » Tue Mar 21, 2017 12:23 am

This is my 1st login after a fortnight cruising, and as usual I updated the PC with various patches etc, including an update to my Firefox browser, before doing much else. FF now at version 52.0.1. And I got an insecure login warning. Wow!. 1st time I've seen that. So I trapped the imagery, FYI.

here's the actual warning

And here's the explanation (the 'learn more' link in the warning)

I logged in here using the old - potentially insecure - login. The forum admins should review and address this issue which would affect anyone using the FF browser 2nd most popular in the world).

Update
After posting, I tried the suggested https method. Outright failure with that, and this is the message displayed (a bit bigger than needed so that the address bar info can be seen)

Don't worry about it Davidk, I get that warning now for every site I visit, that is not secured since the last lot of Windows updates.
Do not get the warning with secured sites like banks

Hi Robert,
Truth. No issues with banking logins. And one of the items I updated with (as mentioned) before accessing the forum were the March MS updates.

Hazarding a guess that the changes that MS made in march to give this effect were the reasons that they aborted the Febpatch tuesday updates last month.

But it still means that the forum admins need to do something about it.

On the 17 March I let this computer install more than 30 Windows updates, so which update(s) has caused the problem, could try uninstalling the updates one at a time to find the culprit, but at this stage it is not much of an issue for me, so will let it ride for the moment to see if anything else develops

It would seem that the programmers of firefox have decided to warn users when they are logging into an insecure site - now that is simply any site which does not use the https protocol and that is around 90% of websites so your going to get that message a lot - most websites and this forum use the http protocol which has been in use for many years it is no less secure now than it has ever been - you have always been able to tell if a site is secure or not by looking at the URL in the address bar - if it starts https then it is a secure site like a bank or email for instance - otherwise it will be http and by Firefoxes definition an "insecure" site

it is a Firefox issue not a Windows issue

I presume that a lot of extra software and maybe cost is involved in using the secure site protocol which is why only banks etc. use it - the admins of this forum will not be changing anything since we do not own the server or the software on it and as I cannot see Corel changing anything for just this forum it would seem to me your best option is to stop using firefox and switch to another browser - or else you will drive yourself mad worrying about something which is no different to what it has been for years.

It is not specifically a Firefox problem either.

Good luck with finding a browser that does not show this behaviour, as Google and other larger organisations are pushing for a more secure Internet. Firefox and Chrome both report http sites as insecure (see https://security.googleblog.com/2016/09/moving-towards-more-secure-web.html ). I have not used Internet Explorer for many years, but I would not be surprised that Microsoft would also post the warning. What else is there in the marketplace.

At least that google article link for chrome posted by xxup lays out a reason and an action timeframe. Firefox never did that -their detail page just says they will do it from v51, which was Feb 2017. I was running v51 that month but never saw it then, but after the MS updates for March 2017 - there it is. Lots of bleats about this in the mozilla FF support pages. And then there's this web video on the subject, which takes apart a complaint (to Mozilla about the FF action) and absolutely rips apart the complainants host website its poor programming and the results of it:
